You know, back in the day they used to have soda fountains where people would go to get on-the-spot made sodas, sundaes, and shakes. This was before sodas were available in grocery stores.
They had all sorts of interesting flavors that they could make, like Pineapple Soda, Cherry Soda, and my favorite, Chocolate Soda.
Actually I just found out about the existence of chocolate sodas this week, from my mother.
This recipe comes from my mother, who once made chocolate sodas "professionally", as a teenager. She used to work in a soda fountain (which was interestingly a part of a pharmacy--I think that was the usual place for a soda fountain to be). She was what they called a "soda jerk"--the person who made the various concoctions of sodas.
Her favorite soda was the chocolate soda, and she says that it was the most popular soda that people would order when they came into the store (even more popular than Coca-Cola!).
She hasn't had one since she was a teenager though. It's not something that you see around very much anymore.
Since it's perfect for summertime, and I hate the idea of this recipe falling into oblivion, we decided to make chocolate sodas today. They were amazing!
It's so easy to make--this would be great to make with your kids or for any sort of fun dessert night. Here's how to make it:
Chocolate Soda
- Chocolate Syrup
- Ice Cream (Vanilla or Chocolate, or your favorite flavor)
- Carbonated water (aka Club Soda)
Step 1: Now, it depends on how much you're making, so all of this is just "to taste". No measurements here. Put some chocolate syrup in the bottom of a glass (say, 1-3 tablespoons, again it depends on how much you're making).
Step 2: Put just a little bit of the club soda in there too. Mix that little bit of club soda and chocolate syrup together.
Step 3: After mixing, then fill the glass half full of club soda. Taste it to make sure it's chocolate-y enough for ya. Add more chocolate syrup if needed.
Step 4: Add a scoop or two of ice cream.
Warning! The ice cream makes the soda fizz up, so watch it. You may need to drink off a little if it looks like it's going to overflow.
Step 5: Chocolate sodas are usually served with a spoon and a straw. Enjoy!
